Horie, Osaka
watts towers.
found in the neighborhood of watts in los angeles.
built over thirty years by an italian immigrant sam rodia. he used an assortment of materials, including cement, tiles, wire hangers, and glass bottles. anything he found, really.
the towers are tucked away in a working-class neighborhood more infamous for the 1965 watts riots than rodia’s life work.
the city wanted the structures demolished in the late 1950s. some neighbors found the towers unsightly, and encouraged their children to vandalize the towers. they survived, and now they are one of the few folk-art historical sites in the united states.
